Zhenghua Primary School was established in 1989, with a student population of 560 and a teaching staff of 28. The school was named after the former Cheng Hwa Public School which was closed in 1985, after 44 years of history.
While waiting for the premises to be ready, the school was housed temporarily at Keming Primary School. The new premises were formally handed over on 4 November 1989 and the school moved in on 30 November 1989. The school fielded its first batch of PSLE candidates in 1990 and obtained an overall pass of 95.7%.
The school has seen the leadership of four principals: i. Mr Chan Kok Min (1989-99) ii) Mdm Lee Tee Choon (2000-05) iii) Mr Koh Chin Thong, Martin (2006-11) iv) Mdm Rita Rajlal (2012- )
The enrolment of the school is 2000 pupils in about 60 classes. In 2005, the school underwent PRIME and was in the holding site in 38 Teck Whye Crescent while the Fajar Road site was upgraded. The school returned to the Fajar Road site in May 2006.
The school has 100 staff. The principal is Mdm Rita Rajlal who took over from Mr Koh Chin Thong, Martin on 15 December 2011. The school achieved numerous awards in recent years. Since 2005, the school achieved the Character Development Award (2007-13), National Education Award (2008-12), Partners Award (2010), Cherish (2006-11), People Developer Standard (2006, 2010), National Art Education Awards (2005, 2007, 2009-11), Sustained Achievement Awards (2007, 2009, 2011) and Green Audit (Lotus) awards (2010-11). The school also became more popular among the residents and some pupils have to undergo ballot to enrol in the school from 2009.
It is a double-session school, with a portion of the pupil population (Primary 1 and 2) attending classes in the afternoon, while the remainder (Primary 3 to 6) attends classes in the morning. Co-curricular activities are held on Thursdays and Fridays. A few pupils have so far entered the Gifted Education Programme.
The school's nearest stations are Choa Chu Kang MRT Station and Fajar LRT Station/Petir LRT Station.
The school is noted for its strength in the aesthetics: the performing arts; music and art, having won national and international awards for Chinese dance, Malay dance, Indian dance, as well as winning national awards for their band and choir. The dance programme was cited by the Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong during the National Day Rally 2010. The dance also performed in the Singapore Day@Shanghai in 2011.
Their brass band was also the first of its kind set up in Singapore by Mr Simon Ng; The Original Dancing Band. The band won five consecutive Gold awards at the Singapore Youth Festival from 1990 to 2000 and performed at events and functions. The band have been invited to perform in countries such as Australia, USA, Thailand, Malaysia and Hongkong.
The school also won the inaugural National Arts Education Award or NAE (Silver) for primary schools in 2005. The silver was the highest level award given to primary schools in 2005. In 2006 the school won the School-Based Excellence (PSE) award from the Ministry of Education for its aesthetics programme, in particular dance. [2]. It has managed to sustain & renew her PSE status since then.
The school also has strong uniform groups, namely the Brownies and Red Cross. The Red Cross are winners of the Excellent Unit Award (Gold) and Community Service Award (Gold). The Brownies are Puan Noor Aishah – Gold winners for the past 5 years. The school also has strong rugby teams who usually come in in the top 4 in West Zone.
